Czestochowa, Poland has witnessed both beauty and atrocity in its long history. During the Nazi invasion and subsequent Soviet occupation, Czestochowa served to fortify the occupiers' positions. The inhabitants were often rudely displaced, and valuable local monuments were torn down to make way for firearms and defense positions. That being said, Czestochowa also supports majestic forest landscapes as well as hauntingly gorgeous medieval castles. If you want to take a jaunt to the nearby town of Olsztyn, you can visit one of these palaces. While in town, you can also take a day trip to a Lusatian museum. While the local Watra River doesn't offer the best swimming, this thunderous body of water gives the city a feel similar to that of a seaside town. For a town of nearly 250,000 residents, Czestochowa is remarkably parochial. With just a little instruction, you can get around easily. That said, before you start hopping on local transportation, we recommend that you connect with someone here at Poland and Beyond.
