Krakow may only be Poland's fourth-largest city, but it is still considered by many to be the heart and soul of the country. Known the world over as the kindred spirit to Prague, Krakow is a magical and mystical place. The architecture of the main market square dates back to 1257, and the gorgeous medieval architecture reflects the patience and determination of a people relentlessly attacked from all sides throughout their history. Krakow is nestled between the Tatra Mountains and the uplands of Jura. The old city of Krakow is situated right by the banks of the legendary Vistula River. Up until the end of the 1500s, Krakow served as the capital of Poland. It was the birthplace of one of the oldest and most well-regarded universities in all of Europe, Jagellonian University. This center of learning educates more than 100,000 people every year. It is akin to a small, Gothic city. Here, hundreds of years ago, the great astronomer, Copernicus, first posited his theory of heliocentrism, which suggested that the sun--not the earth--is indeed the center of the universe. The repercussions of Copernicus's revolution still resonate in the halls of academic institutions to this day. To explore Krakow in its entirety would take a lifetime. However, through Poland and Beyond, one of the country's premier tourism outfits, you can discover the mysticism of Krakow at a reasonable price. Please look through our guided tour itineraries.
