Sightseeing in Poland is a wonderful way to explore the country's rich and dynamic history. In the 10th century, the first Polish dynasty, the Piast, gained territorial control of much of what we consider to be modern-day Poland. Before the ethnic Poles conquered this territory, Slavic tribes developed civilizations, and we have evidence of the writings of these tribes dating back to the sixth century A.D. In the Middle Ages, as the Polish state prospered, rulers constructed marvelous labyrinthine marketplaces, such as the Main Market Square in Krakow, which still stands today as an active bazaar. The marvelous castle in Malbork served as a bastion for both conquerors and Polish kings. Struggle for control of this remarkable castle, which is technically three separate castles integrated into one structural unit, was the source of strife for literally centuries. Another important Polish landmark is Jagellonian University, the oldest school on the continent of Europe and the home to the great astronomical scholar, Copernicus, who developed his groundbreaking idea of heliocentrism while studying at the university. Today, tens of thousands of students still study at Jagellonian University. The medieval architecture of the school is truly something to behold.
