In Czestochowa, we stop off at the Jasna Gora Monastery, a world-famous pilgrimage site and home of the famous Black Madonna painting. This intriguing piece of artwork was painted in the seventh century A.D. and then revised in the 14th century.

In the later Middle Ages, invaders burst into the Jasna Gora Monastery and slashed the face of the Virgin Mary with a sword. Subsequently, the caretakers of the Jasna Gora Monastery restored the painting, although you can still see the scars of this attack today. According to some reports, more than five million people visit the city of Czestochowa to see the Black Madonna painting every year.
