The Polish state emerged some time around the 10th century A.D. The first Polish dynasty, the Piast, developed the Polish national identity and unified independent city states. From the 11th to the 17th century, Krakow served as the capital of the kingdom. Rulers lived in the Wawel Castle and exerted power and influence over an expansive region throughout Eastern and Central Europe.

For centuries, Poland enjoyed an uneasy detente with its neighbors. However, starting in the 17th century, Poland got involved in difficult and devastating wars with Sweden, Turkey, and Russia. Eventually, Poland was subsumed entirely and partitioned among Austria, Russia, and Prussia. For more than a century, the national state of Poland ceased to exist.

In the wake of World War I, Poland was re-established as an independent nation. This independence didn't last long. World War II devastated the region, and the Poles were integrated into the Soviet Union's satellite bloc as soon as World War II finished. Today, after centuries of struggle, Poland is newly independent and free. There has never been a better time to explore this intriguing and mysterious land.
