Rzeszow, Poland is one of the largest cities in the southeastern region of Poland. Home to a population of more than 165,000, it has officially been a town since the middle of the 14th century. During the Middle Ages, Rzeszow by and large belonged to the Lubomirski family, a collection of nobles who had vast influence over the southeastern part of the kingdom.

In the middle of the 17th century, a man named Sebastian Lubomirski established what became one of Poland's most famous secondary schools, the Piarst School. As the nearby township of Przemysl gained prominence and blossomed, Rzeszow began to lose some of its cachet. That said, in the wake of the collapse of Polish communism, it has emerged once again as a strong and vital center of commerce and culture. In 2004, the city was given the great honor of hosting the Central European Olympiads.
